Introduction to the Supporting Safe and Enjoyable Meals elearning module - video transcript

Mealtimes are an important part of our daily lives. They're also a time to enjoy food and drink, be social, and be part of cultural celebrations.

As someone working in the disability sector, your role in providing meal time assistance is really important. People with swallowing difficulty are at risk of choking on food which can be fatal, but there's a lot we can do to reduce the risk of choking so people can enjoy safe meals.

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has an online learning module on how you can best support people to have safe and enjoyable meals. It's free, available online, and can be done at your own pace.

In this module we will look at the importance of following the meal time plan; ways to notice the signs and symptoms of swallowing difficulty; how to prepare meals of the right texture; support good positioning; and the use of assistive technology or equipment like cutlery.

You'll learn through real stories and practical tips how to provide safe and enjoyable meals for the people that you support.

As a support worker under the NDIS Code of Conduct, you have an obligation to provide supports and services in a safe and competent manner with care and skill.
