Supplementary module: Supported independent living (SIL)

These NDIS Practice Standards apply to NDIS providers who are registered to provide supported independent living (SIL) to NDIS participants.

These standards give clear expectations for delivering supported independent living services. They describe what good practice looks like and support:

  • consistent service delivery
  • quality and safety for participants
  • accountability across the sector.

The Practice Standards apply to supported independent living providers who must be registered from 1 July 2026.

Information about the Practice Standards is also available:

Meeting the supported independent living Practice Standards

We have created resources that:

  • help providers, workers, and participants understand and apply the standards
  • help providers prepare to deliver safe, high-quality supported independent living services
  • show how to apply the standards consistently
  • strengthen quality and safeguarding practices
  • achieve better outcomes and experiences for participants.

Providers, workers, and participants are encouraged to use these resources:

  • as they prepare to provide supported independent living services, and
  • as part of ongoing learning and continuous improvement
  • to guide organisational systems and frontline practice.

Provider and worker guides

The Evidence Guide for Providers and Workers gives practical information about the standards. They include:

  • clear explanations of each standard
  • examples of how the standards can be applied in practice
  • guidance on meeting registration and compliance requirements
  • information to support continuous improvement.

These guides are intended to support both organisational systems and frontline practice, helping providers and workers prepare for and embed the standards into their everyday service delivery.

Participant guide

The Reflective Questions for Participants provides clear, simple reflective questions for participants. They help participants think about their experience of supported independent living services. Providers, workers and supporters can use the guide to:

  • have conversations with participants about their supports
  • support participants to know their rights and choices
  • help participants relate the reflective questions to the supported independent living standards
  • support participants to be informed, prepared, and involved in decisions
  • strengthens the participants voice in the delivery of their supports.
