If the application for variation is not approved, the provider cannot deliver supported independent living (SIL).

1. Awareness

Provider is aware that changes for supported independent living providers and transition arrangements apply from 1 July 2026.

2. Preparation

Provider understands obligations for supported independent living providers, including mandatory registration and compliance with the new supported independent living Practice Standards from 1 July 2026

3. Applies for variation

The provider applies for a variation of registration to deliver SIL supports before or after 1 July 2026:

  • applications before 1 July 2026 will include registration group '0115 Assistance with daily life tasks in a group or shared living arrangement'
  • applications after 1 July 2026 will include registration group '0138 Assistance with supported independent living'.

The provider may receive a scope of audit.

4. Audit process

The provider engages an Approved Quality Auditor (AQA) to determine whether an out‑of‑cycle audit is required to add the registration group.

If the audit happens before 1 July 2026

The out-of-cycle audit will not include the new supported independent living Practice Standards.

If the audit happens after 1 July 2026

The out-of-cycle audit will include the new supported independent living Practice Standards.

5. Variation review

The provider responds to NDIS Commission questions and provides information during variation review, if required.

6. Variation decision

If the application for variation is approved, the provider receives a notice of decision and the registration group '0138 Assistance with supported independent living' is added to their certificate of registration.

If the provider is audited before 1 July 2026, they may receive conditions of registration that require additional audits.

From 1 July 2026, the provider must comply with the new supported independent living Practice Standards to remain registered. They will be audited against the new Practice Standards in the next audit after this variation.

If the application for variation is not approved, providers cannot deliver supported independent living (SIL).
