NDIS Commission response to Duckett review into Art and Music Therapy
The NDIS Commission welcomes the release of the independent review into Art and Music Therapy and will consider the recommendation to introduce an ongoing mechanism to review the verification requirements for recognition as an art and music therapist.
Under current arrangements Art and Music Therapists are not required to be registered with the NDIS Commission to deliver services. Should art and music therapists seek registration, they are registered under the verification module. This module requires auditors to assess a provider, and find them compliant against, the Human Resource Management, Incident Management, Complaints Management, and Risk Management NDIS Practice Standards. The required documentation for the verification module sets out the qualification requirements that each profession must hold to be a registered NDIS provider against certain support categories.
Requirements for music and art therapists under the verification module are as follows:
Art Therapists - required qualifications and experience:
- Professional membership with the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapy Association (ANZACATA)
- Experience in the profession and evidence of involvement in clinical supervision and professional development as required by ANZACATA.
Music Therapists - required qualifications and experience:
- Active ‘registered music therapist’ with the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA)
- Experience in the profession and evidence of involvement in clinical supervision and professional development as required by the appropriate professional body.
